Coonoor the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris is about 19 km from Ooty.Apart from its strategic location Coonoor is also conferred with lavishly staged or spectacular display of natural beauty. Regal and memorable ambience echoes with beauty & brilliance. There are various places for sight seeing and you also get to witness the tribal festivals held here. Tea being the major area for commercial purpose you also get to see the beautiful tea plantations.Coonoor is the most commonly visited place for bird watchers for the place is full of beautiful and rare birds including black woodpecker, parakeets, barbets, mynas, cuckoos, Malabar trogon, Malabar gray hornbill, crested hawk eagle, and crested serpent eagle.

Places to Visit in Coonoor

Sim's Park :- Sprawled over an area of 12 ha, the park showcases more than 1,000 plant species. The collection includes magnolia, tree ferns, pines, and camellia. The garden is partially developed in the Japanese style and also gets its name from the secretary of the Madras Club in 1874, J. D. Sim. The annual fruit & vegetable show, in the month of May, is one of the major attractions of the park.

Dolphin's Nose Viewpoint:- Located at a distance of 10 km from Coonoor, this viewpoint ensures a panoramic view of the surrounding. The vast expanse of the Nilgiri Hills and the Catherine Falls spellbound the visitors.

Lamb’s Rock:- This tourist attraction is located at a distance of 5½ km from Coonoor, and on the way to the Dolphin's Nose viewpoint. Lamb’s Rock is also a viewpoint to enjoy the view of the fantastic landscape and the coffee and tea plantations.

Droog Fort:- This fort is located at a distance of 13 km from Coonoor. The ruins of the fort reflect the bygone story. Moreover, this fort, in the 18th century, belonged to Tipu Sultan.

Law's Falls: - These are majestic waterfalls, located at a distance of 5 km from Coonoor. Law’s falls are situated en route to Mettupalayam.

Katary Falls:- The Power station, supplying a power of 1000KW near Selas, is one of the must visit tourist attraction in Coonoor.

Pasteur Institute:- To visit the Pasteur Institute the tourists require a special permit. Located near the Sim’s Park, the institute started in 1907. This institute is popular for developing vaccination for rabies (dog bite disease) and Triple Vaccine (DPT, DT & TT). During the initial years, this institute played a major role in the Influenza vaccine research. The institute is also famed for developing Tissue Culture Anti Rabies Vaccine (TCARV) and the DPT group of vaccines.
