oorg, officially called Kodagu, is the most sought after and popular hill station of Karnataka. Lying serenely amidst high mountains, Coorg’s landscape stays misty throughout the year. The aboriginals of the place are Kodavas. Apart from Kannada, the other two main languages of this hill station are Kodagu and Kodava.
The best time to visit Kodagu is between October to May and the peak season for this hill station is within February to May. Kodagu is the largest producer of Coffee in India. Also, it is one of the places with highest rainfall across the nation. Undulating hills covered in lush green forests and a landscape dotted with coffee plantations, tea gardens and orange groves, this hill station has breathtakingly stunning scenic beauty.
The gorgeous landscape of Coorg is of rolling hills with acres of coffee plantations intermittently dotted with lush teakwood and sandalwood forests. The villages and hamlets here exude a forever ambience, timeless in their beauty.

The history of Kodagu is rich, replete with the stories of its brave warriors and worth exploring in its many historical monuments. It was a state until 1956, when it merged with Karnataka. Its primary inhabitants are of the Kodava race and it is believed that they have descended from migrating Persians and Kurds. Another theory says that they are Greeks left behind from Alexander the Great's armies.
The climate and the landscape make Kodagu perfect for long walks, treks and its rich fauna make it a paradise for birdwatchers. Angling and white-water rafting are other activities one can indulge in when in Coorg. The ious plantations of Coorg are the major go-to relaxation destination for the ones looking to soak in the beauty of nature in peaceful environs.
With an old-world charm of its own, Coorg is known for festivals like Keil Poldu worship of weapons, Cauvery Shankaramana return of the river goddess and the Huttari harvest festival.
Coorg is also famous for trekking activities with peaks like Thandiyandamole, Brahmagiri and Pushpagiri. Elephant rides at Dubare Elephant camp and white water rafting in Upper Barapole River are other interesting things to do in Madikeri. Besides, Coorg can also be visited along with Wayanad packages.
Mangalore airport is the nearest airport which is 146 km from Madikeri. Mysore Junction and Mangalore Junction railway stations are nearest stations. Mangalore Junction Railway Station is about 131 km and Mysore Junction Railway station is about 117 km from Madikeri. KSRTC buses as well as private buses provide services to Madikeri from nearby cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Ooty, etc.
Coorg has pleasant weather throughout the year, though October - June is the best time to visit Coorg. It usually takes about 1-2 full days to visit the important places in Coorg.
